PLEASE JOIN US FOR A NIGHT OF TRADITIONAL MOROCCAN, SUFI AND GNAWA TRANCE AND ROLL MUSIC PRESENTED BY THE BAY AREA’S OWN MOROCCAN MUSICIAN EXTRAORDINAIRE YASSIR CHADLY AND HIS NEWEST GROUP .
Yassir Chadly has been performing and teaching Moroccan music in the U.S. since arriving here in 1977. His innovative style and distinctive personality has led him to collaborate with many Jazz and World Music artists including Pharoah Sanders, Steve Coleman, Omar Sosa, Khalil Shaheed, Ian Dogole and Randy Weston. He has composed and performed music for Alonzo KIng and The Lines Ballet Company of San Francisco, The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre , and was a featured performer with composer Philip Glass and his ensemble at the Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. In addition to his musical talents he has also performed as a Folkloric Storyteller, bringing together Western and Sufi traditions in an innovative style . As a speaker he has lectured extensively on Islamic and Sufi subjects promoting understanding and religious tolerance.
Yassir is also an Associate professor at The Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley and has been the Imam at The Masjid Al Iman in Oakland for years.
