Event description

Description

Ya Kos is the Susu word for "now." Life's most memorable moments are accomplished when we are present to one moment ... NOW. Much like life's moments, if we are not attentive to the rhythm, we are off beat and out of synch. This class will explore being entirely present to the rhythm and how it connects us to the wholeness of our senses, other dancers, and musicians. Balafonist Alya Sylla and percussionist Isa Rios will blend world rhythms for students to experience via dance. Kim Porter will teach choreography inspired by West African and Latin American world dance and mindfulness practices. Ages 13 and up.

When: Tuesdays in December 6:30 - 7:30pm. December 6th, 13th, 20st.

Where: Move Studio on the 5th floor.

Cost: 3 session monthly pass $45. You may pay a drop-in fee of $18 at the door. Check the ticket to see how many spaces remain in the class.

What to Expect: Include appropriate info for your studio if necessary. ie: Wear clothes you can move in and bring a water bottle. We have limited changing room space and do not have lockers for personal items at the moment so please plan accordingly. Dancing barefoot is recommended but not required. Check our FAQs below for any further questions.

Kim studied dance all of her youth. It wasn’t until later adulthood she realized a certain kind of joy was missing. Kim began studying West African music and dance 7 years ago. After 2 internships with professional dance companies in Guinea, West Africa, she began to teach. “African dance has taught me that rhythm grounds us in the moment and connects people to each other.” Kim is passionate about creating a dance class in which students and musicians experience the energetic exchange that heightens movement in the body and play on the instruments.

What inspires you?

“I am inspired by the culmination of live music and dance. 100% in-the-moment awareness is required for live music and dance to feed each other. Magic happens in the energetic response between dancers and musicians.”

Isa attended multiple performing arts academies throughout is education in home state of California. After specializing in various percussion instruments, he completed his first tour at 14 and collaborated on his first album at age 17. He has been involved in numerous genres of music on the scene in Boise and is currently an instructor at Boise Rock School.

What inspires you?

"I’m inspired by human’s innate attraction to music. The natural tendency is to go closer.”

Alya comes from a long lineage of balafon players in his native country of Guinea, West Africa. He began playing balafon at age 5 under the instruction of his father. Alya started playing professionally at age 20 for a variety of Guinean ballet companies which took him on tours through Africa, Europe, Canada and the US. He has now lived and worked in the US for 6 years playing in bands producing music ranging from traditional African to Latin fusion and reggae.

What is your passion?

“Making people happy with my music! I love to see faces smile.”
