Event description

Description

Are you in high school (in grade 9 to 12)* and want to build your problem-solving, entrepreneurship and leadership skills? Want to network and work directly with established and serial entrepreneurs?

Whether or not you have a business idea (and this isn't only for business students!) the Y2 Entrepreneurship Conference will offer you hands-on opportunities to work with mentors and coaches who have run their own businesses for years.

You will participate in 3 hands-on workshops (design thinking, building an investor pitch presentation, effective public speaking) delivered by business leaders who provide this expertise to other businesses. You will meet many like-minded high-school students who want to experience what it's like building a creative idea in "the real world."

And, if you're interested to start a business, keep in mind that so far, some Y2 alumni have gone on to participate in pitch competitions and other incubators, and earn more than $10,000 in seed funding.

Here's What Will Happen

The conference (this will be #9) is broken into 2 consecutive Saturdays, February 29 and March 7. Participants attend on both days - here's the program:

On February 29:

  • You'll have time to think of one (or more) business ideas addressing any of sustainable planet, mental health, or community - mentors will be around to help you work on your idea.
  • You'll have the chance to pitch your idea to the participants. Everyone will vote on their favs, and the shortlisted ideas will be what the conference focuses on from that point forward.
  • You'll form teams, and each team will be assigned a coach to help you evolve your idea.
  • You'll participate in several mini-workshops around design thinking, have time to work, then learn about building a pitch presentation for investors.

On March 7:

  • You'll get some tips on "effective public speaking for entrepreneurs".
  • You'll have time to rehearse in your teams.
  • You'll present your pitch to a panel of established entrepreneurs and angel investors (think Dragons)

In past conferences, more than 400 participants have come from across the GTA, as well as from as far away as Buffalo NY, Oakville, Guelph and London (Ontario)! And there have been more than 130 volunteer entrepreneurs acting as coaches, mentors, judges, speakers, or facilitators - and they also came from across the GTA.

BTW, we offer Effective Networking and Public Speaking certificates to students enrolled in SHSM - check and see if these certifications are relevant for you.

On top of all the networking and training, the 2 winning teams will be treated to dinners with a serial entrepreneur or senior technology leader. Ask your families - many adults don't have opportunities to sit down with business leaders like this!

The registration fee includes 6 meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner on both days), all of the workshops, and a copy of Y2's ThinkBook, which will help participants think through various aspects of creating a solution to address a problem, and possibly starting a business.

In-Conference Incubator for Grade 7 and 8 Students

As with the 2019 conference, the 2020 conference will feature an incubator for up to 12 students in grades 7 and 8, where participants in these grades will not only learn with all of the other participants, but they will receive additional instruction (from a York Region District School Board teacher who was an investment banker in his previous life) and mentoring (from several Business students from Bur Oak Secondary School in Markham). The experience in 2019 was that students in this stream had additional guidance to think through their ideas and put their prototypes and pitches together, and their final presentation stood tall with all other teams' presentations.

*Please note that this conference is open only to students in high school (grade 9 to 12) and grades 7&8. Also, to ensure an ideal experience for each participant, registration will be capped at 70 participants.
