Description

WWW - What’s Working Well to build the social and emotional learning of children online and offline?

Technological change is moving so quickly. It is challenging for even digital natives to keep up-to-date with the latest device, fad or popular social networking site. This seminar will use evidence from research conducted since 2006 by Donna Cross and her research team. This research investigated the online behaviours of children and young people and actions parents and other members of the school community can take to protect and enhance their own and their children’s digital lives (and reputations) and to minimise possible cyber-related harms from their interactions in an online environment. It will also include information related to children’s brain development and how spending time online may enhance and inhibit aspects of children’s social and emotional development.

Presenter

Donna Cross is a Professor with the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences at the University of Western Australia and the Telethon Kids Institute. She is the Head of Health Promotion and Education Research and Director of the Early Childhood Development and Learning Collaboration. Donna has led over 50 applied longitudinal school and community-based health promotion and education research intervention projects in Australia and the USA, investigating ways to enhance children’s and adolescents’ social and emotional development (both online and offline). She currently leads 11, 3-5 year research projects investigating ways to enhance young people’s health and wellbeing, especially among vulnerable school-age children.

All net proceeds raised will go towards Telethon Speech & Hearing, a not-for-profit organisation supporting children with hearing, speech and language needs. Telethon Speech & Hearing would like to thank Professor Cross for donating her time.

Places are limited. No door tickets available. Enquiries to Yuriko Kishida (Telethon Speech & Hearing) at ykishida@tsh.org.au or 08 9387 9888.
