Friends Who Are Going
Event description

Description

Imagine being part of the a group of young men, all from the same area in NW Leicestershire who volunteered to go to war. They were the first fifty men to set foot in France, many did not return and others returned in poor health.

There story is being honoured in this exhibition by member sof the community where they lived and worked. Over 1000 people are contributing to this exhibition in some way or other.

We have created life size cut outs of each soldier and each has their own story taken from a book by Michael Kendrick 'Fifty Good Men and True' with additional information coming from researchers and local people.

The soldiers have been issued to local groups, organisations, businesses and schools, they have been invited to decorate their soldier in a fitting manner, and on the back provide a little information about themselves and why they chose to commemorate their soldiers life.

On the 11th November after the remembrance service at the Clock Tower in Coalville, the exhibition will open.

These soldiers, all 50 of them will be on display and you are welcome to walk amongst them and read their stories.

There will also be other activities taking part on some days

  • WW1 Archive Films being shown in the 'Coalville Electric Theatre'
  • Letters to / from the front your opportunity to share your thoughts
  • Display of WW1 information & exhibits

Donations will be accepted and will be shared amongst ex services charities with NW Leicestershire projects.
