Event description

Description

The Wetlands Regional Monitoring Program (WRMP) will be hosting its fourth workshop, focusing on mosquito habitats and mosquito control in the tidal marshes of the lower San Francisco Estuary, and you are invited!

Mosquitoes are naturally occurring residents of tidal marsh ecosystems. However, certain conditions can lead to an overabundance of mosquitos, and can convert otherwise beneficial sites into public nuisances or, worse, true public health threats. In addition, public support for wetland mitigation or restoration projects can erode quickly if they produce significant numbers of mosquitos.

To reduce insect nuisances and protect public health, all parts of the Bay Area have publicly funded mosquito control programs, with staff that monitor and respond to mosquito production, and that collaborate with resource managers and project proponents to minimize mosquito production.

Sharing information about mosquitoes and mosquito control practices, and coordinating the wetlands monitoring activities of the mosquito control community with other interested parties is the rationale for the workshop.

The workshop will include experienced speakers from mosquito control programs, academia, and resource agencies, together with break-out sessions and group work, to cover the following topics:

  • Intro to Mosquito Control: Justification, Legal Powers, Control Tools, and Decision Making

  • Monitoring Mosquitoes & Disease Risk: Where are mosquitos and pathogens? Surveillance strategies. Control actions and thresholds

  • Monitoring Mosquito Habitats: What makes good mosquito habitat? Design guidance for avoiding mosquito production. Monitoring changing landforms and ecosystems as potential habitat

  • Monitoring Mosquito Control: Data collection requirements. Case studies on impact assessment. Collaborative wetland management.

  • Networking and Informal Discussion (optional): The scheduled agenda will end at 3:30, leaving time for additional unstructured discussion.

Workshop Co-leads: Karl Malamud-Roam (San Francisco Estuary Institute) & Wes Maffei (Napa County Mosquito Abatement District)

More information:

The Wetlands Regional Monitoring Program (WRMP) is convening stakeholders from a broad range of backgrounds and expertise to develop a regional monitoring program plan for wetlands in the Bay Area. This program will help to implement Action 2 in the Estuary Blueprint, and will help local, regional, state, and federal agencies evaluate the effectiveness of efforts to sustain healthy aquatic habitats and resources.
