Event Details

This two-part webinar will teach participants how to write translators for the open source reference manager Zotero. Web translators are individual JavaScript files that permit Zotero to read and ingest citation metadata from a website with a single click. Participants are encouraged to come with a target website for which they would like to add a translator. The goal of the workshop is for each participant to have written their own translator by the end of the webinar and to feel able to write more translators in the future.

Basic familiarity with the DOM model and JavaScript will be highly useful, but is not required—participants without any prior knowledge should be fearless in the sight of computer code, though: you will be writing your own.

  1. Types of Zotero translators
  2. Basic Structure of Zotero translators
  3. Quick review of the DOM model: How to find information on a webpage
  4. Scraping data into Zotero
  5. Import translators: identifying and using metadata on the web

A follow-up webinar will take place on November 10th from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM EST.

Facilitator: The webinar will be led by Sebastian Karcher. Sebastian, who recently completed his PhD in political science at Northwestern University, has been co-maintaining Zotero translators since 2012 and has contributed, reviewed, and fixed countless translators since then.

The webinar is hosted by the Public Library of Science (PLOS) with Martin Fenner as moderator. All documents related to the webinar can be found in this Github repo.
