Event description

Description

As part of the 2019 Virginia Festival of the Book, bestselling and award-winning authors Laurie Halse Anderson (SHOUT) and Jason Reynolds (Long Way Down) discuss their relationships to writing and reading, the impact that storytelling and books have had on their lives, and the ways in which their work is meant to be a call to action for readers.

Please note that this event is for mature audiences only; children under the age of 13 will not be admitted.

Why should you attend?

“[SHOUT is] a captivating, powerful read about clawing your way out of trauma, reclaiming your body, and undoing lifetimes of lessons in order to use your voice as the weapon it is. Fervent and deafening.”—Booklist, starred review

“Readers new to Anderson will find [SHOUT] accessible. It’s a strong example of how lived experience shapes art and an important book for the #MeToo movement.”—Kirkus Reviews, starred review

“Told in free-verse poems, [Long Way Down] is a raw, powerful, and emotional depiction of urban violence. Reynolds masterfully weaves in textured glimpses of the characters… all trying to cope with the circumstances of their environment while expressing the love, uncertainty, and hope that all humans share. This astonishing book will generate much needed discussion.”—Kirkus, starred review

“Reynolds’ concise verses echo like shots against the white space of the page, their impact resounding. In this all too real portrait of survival, Reynolds goes toe-to-toe with where, or even if, love and choice are allowed to exist.”—Booklist, starred review
