Writing to Improve Learning, Not Prove Learning: What Administrators Need to Know

Join us on Tuesday, August 29th, 2017 for a complimentary professional development workshop on successfully strengthening students’ critical thinking skills through writing across content areas.

The adoption of new standards across the nation has placed an increased emphasis on writing. What’s more, the Regents and New York Examinations requires students to engage in more robust and varied forms of writing.

In addition to building students’ background knowledge, writing pushes students to go beyond evaluation. The simple act of creating—i.e. writing—strengthens their communication skills and pushes their learning to a deeper level. Simply put, writing is our critical thinking made visible.

However, successfully incorporating literacy across the content areas is complex. In this hands-on workshop, Eileen Murphy, author of 360 Degrees of Text (NCTE, 2012), will support administrators in planning for and implementing effective, standards-aligned writing programs into their curriculum to prepare students for growth.

Agenda:

  • 8:00 a.m. - Breakfast

  • 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. - Professional Development

Please bring your computer device for a hands-on learning experience. Breakfast will be served at 8 a.m. Parking is available.
