About this Event

Nigerian-American New York Times Bestselling Author Bassey Ikpi Speaks in Conversation with South African Writer Sibongile Fisher in Washington, DC

Washington, DC -- On the evening of Friday, April 17, 2020, New York Times bestselling author, ex-poet, mental health advocate, and self-described underachieving overachiever, Bassey Ikpi will speak about her writing, her life, and her award-winning collection of essays, I’m Telling the Truth, but I’m Lying, at Busboys and Poets Brookland in Northeast Washington, DC, from 6:00pm until 8:00pm. In the book, she explores her life—as a Nigerian-American immigrant, a Black woman, a performance poet, a mother, a daughter, an artist—through the lens of her mental health and diagnosis of bipolar II and anxiety. Her remarkable memoir in essays implodes preconceptions of the mind and normalcy as she bares her own truths and lies for us all to behold with radical honesty and brutal intimacy.

Part of the Azania to DC International Arts Exchange program directed by poet Jonathan B. Tucker, Bassey will speak in conversation with visiting writer and performer, Sibongile Fisher, who is on tour for the first time in the United States with two other poets from South Africa (See #AzaniaToDC for more on their DC tour). Winner of the 2018 Brittle Paper Literary Award for Creative Non-fiction, Fisher is also an essayist, poet, playwright, and mental health advocate.

The conversation will open with a poetry performance and conclude with a Q&A session. Copies of I’m Telling the Truth, but I’m Lying will be available for sale prior to and during the event, via Busboys and Poets Books. The event is free and open to the public, but advance book purchases will guarantee seating. Please RSVP!
