Description

The program for West Florida Literary Federation's (WFLF) Foo Foo Fest event, "Writing on the Funny Side of Florida," will feature humor writing workshops from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Pensacola Cultural Center (PCC) boardroom, 400 S. Jefferson St., and readings and book signings from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at Artel Gallery, 223 Palafox Place. The workshops are $15, inclusive. Readings/book signings are free.

Craig Pittman has won top awards for his environmental journalism articles six times. He has also received three first-place awards for his magazine articles. He is the author of four books, including the 2017 Florida Book Award gold-medal winning non-fiction commentary "Oh Florida! How America’s Weirdest State Influences the Rest of the Country." “Oh, Florida!” was also a New York Times Best Seller. Pittman is a Pensacola native and former reporter for the Pensacola News Journal.

Leanna Conley is involved in diverse arts fields, including public speaking, theater, writing, comedy, and illustration. She has performed at SoftRock 94.1, written for Bella magazine, has coached public speaking through her "Stand Up To Speak" seminars, and is currently writing “The Janet Chronicles” about life with her stage mother. Conway is a comedienne who performed with Tim Meadows and Chris Farley at Second City, and was also a writer for “Dennis Miller Live.” She is longtime Pensacola resident.

Erik Deckers is a professional writer, and has been a newspaper humor columnist since 1994; Laughing Stalk is published in ten newspapers. He has written several radio and stage plays and is the co-author of four social media books. Deckers was also the Spring 2016 writer-in-residence at the Jack Kerouac House in Orlando and is currently on their board of directors. He “can find Pensacola on a map”.

Northwest Florida Poet Laureate Jamey Jones will emcee the event at Artel Gallery, which will be exhibiting its annual showcase event, “Cinco Banderas,” at that time.

The Pensacola "String Farm Band," which plays bluegrass and Old Time Gospel, will play at the Artel during the break between the writing workshops and readings. The performance will be free and open to the public from 6 p.m. and is available to WFLF members and workshop participants beginning at 5 p.m.

WFLF is urging workshop attendees to continue the humor quest by discovering "Weird (Funny) Florida" through self-guided tours, which WFLF is coordinating with T.T. Wentworth Museum, UWF’s Historic Trust, and Pensacola Little Theater. Workshop participants will receive free admission for most tours.
