Event Details

“To make a great film you need three things – the script, the script and the script.” -- Alfred Hitchcock

Bring your story ideas/scripts and learn how to take them from inception to production!

Some of the things we'll cover in this interactive workshop*:

  • We'll go over the basics of writing a screenplay, from brainstorming, pre-writing, execution and revision, to submitting to screenwriting festivals and producing your own work
  • Discuss the process for writing effective dialogue, using elements from improv (writers are improv artists -- in their head, of course -- we'll cover how to bridge that gap)
  • Break down the three act structure (which applies to short projects as well) and how to write for it
  • Look at the shooting scripts from a few successful films, and deconstruct what makes them work so well
  • Take some of the story ideas brought to the workshop (or create our own as a group), and take it through the steps of prewriting
  • Engage in active writing story development exercises/games
  • Discuss writing for a budget and how the industry is changing the craft.

And much more!

*Please note that this first workshop is part of a series

Dave Moutray

An award-winning Director and Screenwriter, Dave has a M.A. in English and an M.F.A. in Screenwriting, and is co-founder of Crux Jinx Productions, LLC in San Francisco, CA.

Originally from the Midwest, he found his love for film fulfilled in the Bay Area, and is founder of the Bay Area Film Mixer, which allows filmmakers from all over the Bay to network and create a tighter community of like-minded film professionals.

As a filmmaker, his focus is character and story driven narratives, regardless of genre. After winning awards for his short films, he tackled his first feature film, Losing Her, which won Best Feature at the Noor Film Festival in Los Angeles and the Golden Ace Award at the Las Vegas International Film Festival, is in post-production on another called Lost in the Sun, and is now in production on a TV series about the SF improv world called Making It Up.

He's excited to teach what he's learned and experienced from telling stories in the Bay.  He also has some great mentors to thank --  Matthew Jacobs (Emperor's New Groove, Dr. Who, Your Good Friend, Bar America) and Robert Keats (head of Academy of Art Screenwriting program).
