Learn the tricks to writing amazing book characters!

About this Event

Everyone loves masterfully-crafted book characters, but what does it take to bring one to life? Wrestling with fictional characters is a familiar pastime for experienced as well as new writers. Yet, every reader who cracks open a book expects to be fascinated by the people they meet there. It’s an ongoing struggle to create realistic characters who fulfill all the functions of story and resonate with the reader as real, engaging people. In this class, we will learn the basics of writing characters and the ways to form and maintain realistic, entertaining individuals that inhabit our stories.

Your Instructor: Oksana Marafioti is the author of American Gypsy: A Memoir (FSG, 2012) and Donatti's Lunatics (TWRP, 2018). Her writings have appeared in Rumpus, Slate, and Time magazines, and in a number of literary journals and anthologies. She has presented lectures on the Library of Congress channel and CSPAN’s Book TV. Oksana was the 2013 Library of Congress Literary Award Recipient. She is the current guest editor of the Critical Journal of Romani Studies at Central European University. Oksana is the 2020 recipient of the Picador Excellence in Literature Award from the University of Leipzig, Germany.
