Writing Complex Characters

People are complicated. Our characters can be, too. But how do you make a character on the page, created out of words, feel as multi-dimensional and deep as a real person? In this workshop, we’ll look at how other writers have evoked the characters in their stories, then we’ll work on craft exercises to deepen our own characters. We’ll have time to develop that character in a longer piece and then share work with one another at the end.

SLANT workshops are intended for high school students. We meet in StudioNPL on the third floor of the Nashville Public Library. This is a free event open to students from any area, but workshop seating is limited, so please click to RSVP. If you sign up for an event and find that you are unable to attend, please let us know as soon as possible so that someone else has the opportunity to participate. Contact joe@porchtn.org with questions.
