Event description

Description

Volunteer with Behind the Book, a non-profit literacy organization that inspires New York City public school students to explore stories and empower their voices. Through our innovative programs, which are part of the class curricula, accomplished authors visit high-needs pre-K-12 classrooms to guide students in creating their own writing and art projects based on the theme of the author's book.

You need no experience or training to volunteer. As a coach, you'll support and encourage students as they work in the classroom.

This workshop needs your help in Washington Heights. To volunteer, reply with the program code to volunteer@behindthebook.org. We'll supply the address, directions, and other information when you're confirmed:

Program 43IH-H

Date: Monday, January 29th, 2018

Time: 9:30 – 11:00 AM

Volunteer Role: Writing Coach

About the workshop: Urban Animals by Isabel Hill introduced third-graders to the variety of animal images depicted on urban building faces. Students observed those features in their own neighborhood to report on their newfound knowledge of architectural details. Writing coaches will guide them in revising drafts that incorporate their research and use science-specific vocabulary. Their work will be published in a class book.

For dates of other workshops around New York City, please visit our volunteer opportunities page.

To join our team and receive announcements of new programs as they're scheduled, please complete our brief questionnaire.
