We often divide writing into fiction and nonfiction—that is to say, real and not real. But in reality, those distinctions are not always as clearly defined as we think. Writing between the lines is all about writing in the spaces between stated facts.

This workshop will examine the idea of speculative nonfiction: writing that moves beyond nonfiction’s factual surface to delve into subtext, assumptions, and the plethora of possibilities that exist between stated truths. Whether it’s considering our faulty memory in a memoir or moving beyond our own biases in an essay, speculative nonfiction allows us to look deeply at our subject matter and find the trickier truths hidden within.
