About the Event

The English Graduate Program at Mount Mary University is pleased to announce the upcoming Writers on Writing Series, featuring author R. M. Kinder and Mary Troy. Kinder will be reading from her latest novel The Universe Playing Strings. Troy will be reading from her most recent novel Swimming on Hwy N. Following their readings, both authors will be answering questions from the audience and books will be available for sale and signing. The event is free and open to the public.

About the Authors


R. M. Kinder is the author of two novels, The Universe Playing Strings and An Absolute Gentleman; two collections of short fiction, A Near-Perfect Gift and Sweet Angel Band; and co-author of a dual media biography: Old Time Fiddling: Hal Sappington, Missouri Fiddler. Her short-stories, non-fiction, and poems have appeared in over sixty publications. Kinder received her B.A., M.F.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Arizona, Tucson. From 1989 to 2002, she was a professor of English at the University of Central Missouri. Her teaching emphases were women writers, both in the US and worldwide, and creative writing. She was Coordinator of Creative Writing, editor of Pleiades literary journal, and founder of Pleiades Press. Currently editor emerita, Kinder still reads for Pleiades, particularly as judge for the journal’s realistic national fiction contest. She serves also as advisory editor with New Letters journal and BkMk Press and is a co-editor at Sweetgum Press and Cave Hollow Press, both of which promote regional writing.

Mary Troy is the author of the novels Swimming on Hwy N and Beauties, winner of the USA book award and finalist for Foreword Review’s Book of the Year Award. She is the author of three previous books, all collections of short stories: Cookie Lily, The Alibi Cafe and other stories, and Joe Baker Is Dead. Her short stories and essays have been published widely in Boulevard, New Letters, American Fiction, The Arkansas Review, Pleiades, and more. She has won a Devil’s Kitchen Reading Award, a Nelson Algren Award, a John Gould Fletcher Award, and was a finalist for the William Rockhill Nelson Award. She teaches fiction writing and contemporary literature for the University of Missouri-St. Louis where she has won the MO Governor’s award for teaching excellence and the University of Missouri System President’s Award for Leadership. She is also the editor of Natural Bridge, a journal of contemporary literature.
