We know that to write well, first one must observe the world well. This collaborative workshop will look at the ways that relatively modest cameras can be great aids in capturing hidden moments. After all, as the expression goes, “the best camera is the one you have with you,” so this event will have nothing to do with aperture or megapixels and everything to do with invention, discovery, breaking rules, and just plain having fun. Bring your phone or pocket camera and come prepared to leave the Beach House seeing the world in a new and surprising way. We’ll also briefly talk about the pleasures of analog photography, since Polaroids are making a stealth comeback on the art scene, and despite rumors to the contrary, traditional film is very much alive and well too. Charles Hood has taken pictures from the Arctic Circle to the South Pole, and from Senegal to the Santa Monica Pier. All ages and skill levels welcome.
Charles Hood begins his Residency November 26, and is working from the Resident Office upstairs in the Marion Davies Guest House through February 4, 2013. He holds public drop-in office hours most Saturdays from 11am-2pm. Hood is spending his time at the Beach House working on a series of fictional biographies currently titled Back Stories, based around the “orphaned portraits” created by Don Bachardy over many years. Bachardy is a longtime resident of Santa Monica and his life with author Christopher Isherwood has been immortalized in print and on the screen. Bachardy’s works have been featured in exhibitions across the country, with portraits residing in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the Huntington Library and Gallery, the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University, the Smithsonian Institute and the National Portrait Gallery, London. Among the portraits Bachardy made of the known and the beautiful (Tom Ford, Ginger Rogers, Henry Fonda), he also painted sitters whose identities are now lost — a friend of a friend of a friend, a surfer he met on the beach, an amateur model. With these “orphans” there is often little but a date, or possibly a name. Hood’s project weaves a fictional history for these faces, welcoming them back to the common narrative.
A Los Angeles native, Charles Hood has been a dishwasher, a factory worker, a ski instructor, and a nature guide in Africa. He attended Glendale College, Cal State Northridge, U.C. Irvine and the University of Utah, and also did Fulbright work in New Guinea, translating tribal poetry. For birdwatching, photography, or writing research, he has been to the South Pole (on a National Science Foundation Artists and Writers Grant), to each of the continents, and most of the way to the North Pole. His ninth book won the Hollis Summers poetry prize and will be released this spring by Ohio University Press; his eighth book, 25 Tigers, came out last month. His current projects include a survey of the Solar System titled 200 Moons, and a meditation on faith and history titled Melville in the Holy Land. Hood teaches writing, photography, and journalism at Antelope Valley College. He lives in Palmdale with a wife, a cat, a dog, two kayaks, and five mountain bikes. Directions: The Beach House is located at 415 Pacific Coast Highway, Santa Monica, CA 90402 on the west side of Pacific Coast Highway, a half mile north of the California Incline and a half mile south of Chautauqua Blvd. Plenty of public parking is available - enter off PCH at the Beach House Way traffic light. The facility is easily accessible by foot or bike from the beach bike path, although the Beach closes at sunset. There is ample bike parking at racks throughout the site - remember to bring your own lock.
Parking: For weekday evening Beach=Culture events October - April starting at 5pm, there is a special $5 parking charge at the park and pay machines available in three areas of the ACBH parking lot. Machines take cards and cash and this special rate is only for Beach=Culture attendees; please inform the attendant you are here for Beach=Culture and display your receipt on your dash.
