Event description

Description

How can you make a huge difference in both the indie lit scene AND the lives of Chicago adults kicking addiction, reclaiming their lives after decades of incarceration, or recovering from chronic homelessness and poverty?

By attending Hypertext's Write On! Book Launch & Fundraiser.

Now tell me…how often do you see indie lit lovers and social justice pursuers together? At Hypertext's Write On! Fundraiser, both scenes overlap.

Please join us for a night of readings by special guests Ana Castillo and John McNally—and a host of other talented writers.

Hypertext's Write On! Book Launch & Fundraiser will help raise awareness of our social justice writing workshop classes, celebrate 10 years of indie publishing online and in print, and raise funds to continue these crucial programs.

If you're getting this invite, you already know the power of writing, of all forms of creative expression. That's why Hypertext's duel mission is so critical: teaching and publishing.

To that end, our mission "to teach Chicago adults using storytelling techniques to give them a voice and publishing to give their words a visible home" lives online at HypertextMag.com, in our print journal Hypertext Review, and through our social justice writing workshops.

Since 2009, we've published thousands of professional writers. Since 2017, our literacy programming has impacted hundreds of Chicago adults—at nonprofits including Above & Beyond Family Recovery Center, Breakthrough Urban Ministries, St. Leonard's Ministries.

Here's the plan: you brave the elements and make your way to The Hideout on November 13, grab a cold (or hot…depending on what's up) beverage, and settle in to hear readings by special guests Ana Castillo & John McNally—and a whole slew of kickass contributing writers, old and new.

At the event, you'll have a chance to 'bid' on our Wish List of items—including textbooks and journals for our writing workshops as well as less exciting (but just as important) 'operating' expenses including bookkeeping and grant-writing expenses.

Know that the price to attend—and donations above and beyond the price of admission—will go a long way toward continuing Chicago's big-hearted, bolder embrace of all citizens.

The Fall 2019 print edition includes poetry, fiction, and essays from: Ana Castillo, John McNally, billy lombardo, Jamiece Adams, Joshua Bernstein, David Bontumasi, Alexis Bowe, Fleda Brown, Giano Cromley, Meredith Counts, Miranda Dennis, Margaret Erhart, B.L. Makiefsky, Betsy Finesilver Haberl, Steve Hughes, Rebecca McClanahan, Simone Muench, Mike Puican, Lillie Rice, Jesse Sensibar, Shawn Shiflett, Jackie K. White, Michael Williamson, Jeremy Wilson.

At the event or via the Eventbrite DONATION ticket option, you can help HMS's cover our programmatic and operating expenses including:
