SESSION DESCRIPTIONS

#1 Why Write? / Discover Your Core Message

Do you know what your key message is? Who’s your audience? Knowing why you write is key to clarifying direction, goals, approach, and audience. Whether you write fiction or non-fiction, successful writing usually includes an overarching theme. Explore how the events and experiences of your life (or your character’s life) can hook your readers and draw them into your story.

#2 Plan for Success

Do you struggle to balance time to write with the demands of your everyday life? Unsure how to submit your work and fearful of rejection? In this section of the workshop, we explore methods to organize your writing life and learn tactics to deal with rejection and the disappointment it can bring. Networking and platform building round out the session – all essential skills for those with the goal of publication.

#3 The Path to Publication

“Publishers won’t review my work unless I have an agent. Agents are not interested in my work until I gain publishers’ interest.” Heard it, said it, thought it? In this session, you will learn methods to capture the attention of publishers and potential agents by writing compelling, effective queries and cover letters. Features of successful book proposals will be reviewed as well.

#4 You Can Get There from Here: The Power of Goals

Love to write? Dream of becoming an author? Regardless of your passion, if all you do is dream, you’ll be disappointed with the outcome. Many writers dream big, but lack the push, the productivity, and the process to turn that dream into reality. Setting goals is essential to push through to achieve what you’ve been dreaming about In this session, we will compare and contrast goals and dreams to understand how they are related, but different. Tools and templates are introduced to help you set realistic goals that create publishing power.
