We are excited to host an artist talk with Brooklyn based artist Sarula Bao.

About this Event

Come join us for an artist talk with Chinese American illustrator and comics artist, Sarula Bao! She will discuss her her evolution as an artist and subjects such as identity as a queer Chinese-American and her relationship with Chinese subject matter and the ongoing process of translation of that material through an American lens. There will include an interview portion with fellow artist, David Lee, a reading of new works, and a sale of her zines at the end of the event.

ABOUT SARULA BAO

Sarula Bao is a Chinese American illustrator and graphic novelist based in Brooklyn. She graduated from RISD in 2016 and published a graphic novel, Lissa: A Story about Medical Promise, Friendship, and Revolution in 2017. She currently works as a writer for a graphic novel, a graphic novel project manager/visual consultant, and a freelance illustrator. Her work explores aspects of Chinese culture and queerness through a 2nd generation American experience.

Her works have been exhibited at SPRING/Break Art Show, Red Envelopes Show, Endless Editions Biennial, and she has given artist talks at St. Johns University, University of California Irvine, and RISD. She has been featured in publications such as Beyond Chinatown, Asian American Writer's Workshop, Pen America, Jadaliyya, and American Anthropologist. Her clients have included Guernica Magazine, Narratively, Lenny Letter, The New York Times, Splice, Slate Magazine, Studio Rev and the New York Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.
