Description

To honour the strength and resiliency of refugees, please come to our World Refugee Day event taking place on Wednesday, June 20, 2018 from 10 am to 4 pm.

There are several unique features to this year's World Refugee Day celebration and event:

INFORMATION FAIR (10 A.M. – 4 P.M.)
There will an information fair for the public to come agencies supporting refugees. This will take place on the Main Floor along the Promenade of the Vancouver Public Library.

MARKET PLACE (10 A.M. – 4 P.M.)
There will also be a market place area in the Alice Mackay Room in the Lower Level for local refugees to share and sell their arts and works.

REFUGEE EXPERIENCE SIMULATION (11 A.M – 3 P.M.)
Take a Walk in My Shoes is a unique refugee simulation experience! From 11 am to 3 pm in the Alice Mackay Room, we welcome you to participate in a life changing, interactive experience, which will provide a glimpse into a refugee journey's to Canada. Refugees face numerous challenges when fleeing their home country. The journey does not stop upon arrival to Canada, however. As inland refugee claimants, they have to navigate a highly complex and challenging process of seeking legal status in Canada. As a way of increasing public awareness and education on refugee claimants' lived experiences, we will be provided a simulated experience of what it is like to claim asylum in Canada.

PROCLAMATION & SPEECHES (1 P.M. – 1:30 P.M)
Please join us at 1 P.M. in the Promenade (Main Floor) to hear Councillor Tim Stevenson read a City of Vancouver Proclamation marking World Refugee Day. There will also be a keynote address from Peter Edelmann, from Edelman & Co. Law Offices, as well as speeches from local refugees with lived experience who will share their stories and journeys!
