Event description

Description

World on Your Plate is not just about putting food from around the world on your plate as enjoyable and delicious as that may be. It is about how the food on your plate gets to your plate and how that process affects the entire world.

Every single person in the world consumes food. People sustain themselves with food, celebrate with food, and connect and socialize over food. Many thrive with plentiful, good food while others suffer from too little or poor nutrition. Every human being has a relationship with food. Here in WNY, most of us have easy access to a variety of food from our local farms as well as around the world. However, we need to be mindful of how that food gets to our markets and then to our plates.

The goal of World On Your Plate is to raise awareness, educate our conference attendees and promote actions to address the long list of social and environmental issues involved in getting healthy food on our plates. These issues include the impact of modern and third world agricultural practices on global warming and climate change, the excessive use of pesticides and fertilizer, genetic engineering, transportation of foods to market as well as many broad social and political issues such as fair trade, social/environmental justice, access to healthy foods in low income and minority communities, overall health, political influence and lobbying power of large food production and processing corporations and low wages of migrant and farm workers.

This is World on Your Plate. A food and sustainable living conference - that promotes local, organic, mostly vegan foods and looks for positive ways to make our world a healthier and more just place.

This year’s featured speaker is nationally acclaimed John DeGraaf, author & film producer of “Affluenza” and “The Economics of Happiness”. There will be workshops offered on a variety of topics related to the issues listed above, delicious and healthy foods, vendors, informational tables, gift baskets and more.

Cost for the entire event- Friday and Saturday or just Saturday, including food is $35/$40 (at the door). Friday is $10/ $15 (at the door). Students of all ages who preregister and bring ID will be admitted at no charge. Financial assistance is available.
