DESIGN FOR DIFFERENCE - Design is for EVERYONE

At World IA Day 2019 San Gabriel Valley we will be discussing how accessibility and inclusivity plays an integral role in any project or experience a person develops or design. As a team of librarians, data managers, designers, and developers we understand that designing for inclusivity and accessibility lives outside of just websites or technologies and can be utilized in other realms.

We invite you to join us for a day of lively discussion, interactive workshops, and friendly networking.

Why attend?

World Information Architecture Day is dedicated to the empowerment of local leaders. Our celebrations inspire the global growth of information architecture as a community of practice and we value diverse thoughts and thinkers in our celebrations.

LEARN about information architecture and how you can utilize it in your own projects OR learn how you may already be using it!

ENGAGE with other like-minded colleagues and make new friends from different backgrounds and disciplines.

ENJOY a day of lightning talks, networking, and an interactive workshop.

Speakers

Alesha Arp

Designing for Differences in Usage Maturity. Learn to meet users where they are and design to draw them deeper into your product ecosystem using a usage maturity matrix.

Robert J. Pfaff, Jr.:

Cancer in Context: Language, Symbols, Environment. Understanding the journey through the healthcare system is challenging even outside of the initial diagnosis of cancer patients. In this talk, we’ll look at the context through which they take their journey, trying to better understand their emotions and understanding of the places built around language, symbols, and the environment created by these two key factors.

Christine Meinders:

Contextual Normalcy: Feminist.AI is a community AI research and design group focused on critical making as a response to hegemonic AI. Rather than simply criticize the lack of diversity in AI design and development, we propose an alternative by co-designing intelligent products, experiences, and futures from a feminist approach. In this talk, we will discuss inclusive design approaches and the most recent Feminist.AI project “Contextual Normalcy”, created at the Mozilla sponsored XRStudio. “Contextual Normalcy” is a participatory AI research project that explores alternative visions of normalcy and wellness.

Designing for Accessibility: The workshop will include an introduction and examples of accessible technology for different types of disabilities. This will be followed by interactive activities that reflect how individuals with different types of disabilities experience access. The workshop will conclude with a group discussion on the obstacles they faced and insights they gained from the activities.
