Description

World AIDS Day Mapathon

Increasing Impact through Transparency, Accountability, and Partnerships

Please join us to help map undermapped areas in Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, and Côte d'Ivoire in support of World AIDS Day. For the first time in modern history, we have the opportunity to change the very course of a pandemic by controlling it without a vaccine or a cure. The U.S. government, through PEPFAR, has helped not only save and improve millions of lives, but also transformed the global HIV/AIDS response. The end of HIV/AIDS as a public health threat is finally in sight. Many organizations are partnering for this year’s World AIDS Day Mapathon, including the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team, the U.S. Department of State (MapGive), USAID (YouthMappers), the Millennium Challenge Corporation, and Missing Maps. Thank you to Open Gov Hub and ActioNet for being our sponsors.

We will be mapping in selected areas that all contain high district-level HIV prevalence and burden. We will be mapping using OpenStreetMap (OSM), the free and editable map of the world. Your contributions accelerate progress made toward achieving epidemic control (and ultimately ending the HIV/AIDS epidemic) in these countries. The spatial data generated will improve PEPFAR’s understanding of HIV/AIDS program coverage, the optimization of supply-chain logistics, and the analysis of clinical site-level data in locations until now unmapped, helping better serve those in need.

This event is open to the public and if you don’t already have one, please set up an OSM user account here and join the conversation with these hashtags: #WAD2017 #EndAIDS #epidemiccontrol. Please bring your laptop (and charger) and we look forward to mapping with you on the 30th!
