Importing & Exporting

Presenter: Maggie Weaver

Maggie Weaver will deliver three workshops designed to help entrepreneurs and small businesses get involved in international trade. The workshops explain the steps in import, export and market research in a straightforward way, and describe the resources and government programs that are available. Each workshop is 2 hours, and includes a comprehensive handout.

Workshop #1: First Steps in Importing

Date: December 6, 2017, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Understand product-related regulations and permits, suppliers and country of origin, financial aspects including tariff duties, logistics and the roles of customs brokers & freight forwarders, and customs documentation and clearance procedures. The course takes a strategic approach to importing, complementing the import/export component of the Self-Employment program which focusses on trade operations and documentation.

Workshop #2: First Steps in Exporting

Date: January 25, 2018, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Become familiar with the most useful guides and websites for potential exporters. Understand your obligations under export regulations. Discover online resources for preliminary research on your target market environment. Learn about key federal and provincial government programs, services and resources available to new and potential exporters.

Workshop #3: International Market Research

Date: February 8, 2018, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Outlines the approach to assessing the viability of a new target export market. Covers geographic markets and target consumers; and how to find information on local companies, whether customers, competitors, suppliers or service providers. Summarizes Canadian export regulations, and how to find standards & import regulations in the target market, and some resources that will help with market entry strategies. Complements the Self-Employemnt program session "Finding Canadian Market Information"

As a former business librarian and professional trainer, Maggie brings her information research skills to small businesses and entrepreneurs through workshops, focussing in the international trade area.
