Course 1: Foster Care & Adoption: A Bio-Psycho-Social Look

To truly understand foster care and adoption today, it is necessary to know more than regulations and law (even given that New York State has some of the best in the country). It is important to understand how foster care, by its very nature, can alter child development – and how adoption, and foster care as well, are strongly misperceived by American society. Social workers, no matter what their role, will certainly encounter foster and adopted children in their work, whether as children or adults. The ability to look at their situations through a wide con-temporary lens will enable social workers to work more effectively with populations impacted by foster care and adoption.

Course 2: Talking to Kids About Tough Stuff

This training provides an overview of the challenges associated with having difficult conversations with child welfare-involved children and youth. Participants will explore the reasons why adults feel uncomfortable talking to children about hard topics, and will get guidance on how to manage their own discomfort and become more comfortable with the subject matter. Participants will walk away from the training with a toolbox of techniques and skills to use when talking to youngsters about tough subjects.

Course presenter: Maris H. Blechner, M Ed, LCSW is an adoption specialist with many years as an educator in the United States and Canada, also doing hands-on adoption work. She is presently an adjunct instructor at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College in New York City, and does clinical and administrative consultation, as well as keynotes, conference presentations, and national webinars.
