Description

O ka lihilihi `ula o ka pā`ū

Ka pulelo ha`aheo i ka makani

“The bright colors of the pā`ū, waving proudly in the breeze…”

Hula Master Joseph Ilalaole taught this hula in a style that was characteristically Hawaiʻi island. Choreographed with fluid and exciting movements, the gestures tell the story of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalanianaʻole as a skilled equestrian. One of his students, Aunty Pat Bacon, learned this hula in the 1930s from Ilalaole himself.

Almost a decade ago, ʻIliahi learned this hula from Aunty Pat, and is excited to teach this at Waikoloa, especially because of its styling and choreography.

ʻIliahi is the Kumu Hula of Halau Kekuaokala`au`ala`iliahi, and award-winning school based on Maui island. He is a Master Keiki Hula winning under the tutelage of Kumu Hula ʻOlana Aʻi. He has performed with Ke Kai O Kahiki with Kumu Hula OʻBrian Eselu and took top honors at the Merrie Monarch many years.

Workshop date is Friday, March 10, between 900-1200. A donation of $60 to the Moku O Keawe Foundation. Complete the learning experience with a public demonstration: Participants are encouraged to share the hula at the Hōʻike on Saturday evening.
