ASQ Princeton Section 307 - Nov 8 2017

Value-Stream Mapping (VSM) Workshop

Description: Value-stream Mapping (VSM) is a key Lean methodology that has been utilized in manufacturing, service, software, process, healthcare, and education sectors to achieve significant financial and non-financial gains by reducing muda, mura, and muri.

A VSM includes value-adding, non-value-adding, and business-value-adding steps involved in the material and information flows for a product / service from order to delivery.

VSM is a graphical tool (visually showing interruptions in flow), an analytical tool (showing various elements of time including Takt, Lead, Cycle, Touch, Set-up, Wait, and Move Times), and a line balancing tool. Significant Kaizen Bursts show problems / opportunities for improvement for the whole value-stream and do not sub-optimize parts of it. These opportunities are uncovered using the 7-wastes thinking and implemented for the Future State VSM using the ECRSS thinking. Ideal State VSM utilizes all known Lean methods for future vision.

Lean companies are utilizing VSM as a key diagnostic tool to roll-out Lean deployments and manage their organizations horizontally across the value-stream instead of managing traditionally using vertical, bureaucratic structures. Advanced Lean companies are implementing VSM enterprise-wide as a key strategic tool to achieve business transformation goals encompassing strategy, execution, and organizational culture.

In this interactive and engaging workshop, attendees will create a Current State VSM, identify opportunities for improvement, and create a Future State VSM based on learning achieved during the workshop. Successful completion of the training earns 0.8 RU’s for Professional Development.
