About this event

This workshop, focused on the life and landscapes of Cooperstown’s own Susan Fenimore Cooper, will occur from 5:30-7:30PM on three successive days. Join Rochelle Johnson, a leading Cooper scholar, in an exploration of Cooper’s life in Cooperstown and some of the specific landscapes that informed her insightful ecological understanding. In each session, we will walk through local sites important to Cooper, read selections from her writing, and discuss how she shaped her place-based understanding. We will also do some landscape writing of our own (no experience required). Sessions will take place in various locations around Cooperstown. Moderate walking required. Program is appropriate for adults as well as teenagers.

Rochelle L. Johnson is a leading scholar of Susan Fenimore Cooper and, with her co-editor, has made Cooper’s environmental writings available to today’s readers. The current president of the Thoreau Society and a past president of the Association for the Study of Literature and Environment, her work has been supported by grants from several organizations, including the National Endowment for the Humanities. She is professor of American literature and environmental humanities, and director of the honors program, at the College of Idaho. Her lecture is from a book in progress.
