Event description

Description

This interactive workshop introduces the practice-led research project Communicating Change. The research behind the workshop is a cross-pollination between design and choreography. It applies a participatory body-led approach to investigating the intangible systems of community interaction through generative and improvisational practices. By focusing on the moving body as a mode of communication, these practices provide a platform for communities to physically visualise the current reality of their group dynamic, speculate on emerging realities, and prototype futures aligned with their shared aims.

Through an enquiry into what role the body might play in communicating our individual and shared objectives, the workshop offers participants an opportunity to try out a series of semi-structured games. The games create simple ‘ecologies’ in which participants make decisions on how to situate their actions by attending to the awareness of their own experience and that of others. The activities are largely non-verbal and movement-based. They rely on refining our awareness of where our physical actions originate, what the intentions behind them are, and how they are situated in the social field of a community.

The workshop session will consist of:

An introduction to the context of the research;

Playful activities to re-familiarising the body with pre-verbal ‘felt’ modes of communication and build awareness of self and other;

Collaborative improvisational games played together as a group;

Exploring feedback and discussing experiences from the workshop.

Participants will come away from the workshop with insights into methods and activities for working experientially with communities and social groups. This workshop will be valuable for those interested in the body as a tool of social design and participatory methods for social intervention.

The workshop is open to all and there are no fitness requirements. There will be a short break part way through. The workshop will take place inside the Sonic Immersive Media Lab in the St James Hatcham building. The exhibition will not be accessible for the duration of the workshop. Please wear clothes that are warm enough and are comfortable to move in. Consider bringing a bottle of water. The workshop will be filmed and photographed with written consent sought from participants on the day.
