Workshop: "Roses and Castles" Folk Art of the Canals and Waterways

Overview

A full day workshop exploring and creating the folk art of the canals and inland waterways

Join us for this full day workshop to learn about this unique and beautiful example of English Folk Art. The course is designed for all abilities, from complete beginners to more experienced artists.

What to expect

In this session you will be given step by step instruction on how to paint canal roses in a relaxed and informal setting beside the beautiful Lancaster Canal. Refreshments will be available throughout the day and you can either bring a packed lunch or visit the on-site café. All materials will be provided, and by the end of the day you will have created an original piece of artwork to take home. Please bring along an item to paint (eg a small jug, mug or plate with a plain dark background).

We will also look at the fascinating history of canal art, and how it developed over a period of 200 years, when commercial carrying by narrowboat had an important role to play as part of our transport infrastructure.

Canal art is now on the endangered list of heritage crafts. There are very few artists who do this work professionally, and the tradition is largely carried on by enthusiastic hobbyists who keep the art form alive and relevant today. I would love to share my knowledge and experience with you in the hope that you will continue to practice and promote this wonderful art form which is such an important part of our heritage.

To ensure students get the most out of their day, the number of places will be strictly limited so please book early to avoid disappointment.
