Description

Mike Gravagno interviews 2018 Emerging Voices Ron Dowell and Natalie Mislang Mann, and Fellowship Manager Amanda Fletcher for Writers Block Live. The podcast will be followed by an open q&a for interested fellowship applicants. The 2019 application cycle is now open through August 1, ask us anything.

Ron L. Dowell is a lifelong resident of the Watts and Compton areas of Los Angeles. Employed for 38 years with Los Angeles County, Ron has a unique perspective on local urban communities that, in turn, inform many of his stories. He holds two master’s degrees from California State University, Long Beach, in criminal justice and emergency services administration. Ron is working on a collection of short stories and being mentored by Tananarive Due.

Natalie Mislang Mann is an educator who holds a master of arts in humanities from San Francisco State University. Her writing has appeared in Angel City Review, The Rattling Wall, and the anthology Only Light Can Do That. Natalie is currently working on a memoir based on her experiences growing up in a multi-ethnic family in the San Fernando Valley and being mentored by Angela Morales.

Amanda Fletcher is the Emerging Voices Fellowship manager at PEN America Los Angeles. A 2012 Emerging Voices Fellow herself, she is also a former writer and editor for After Party Magazine, and her travel and feature writing have appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books, Orange County Register, Coast Magazine, Hippocampus Magazine, and the Ignite Magazine blog. She previously worked with a global nonprofit for which she helped young chief executives tell their stories, and she has been a moderator for the Los Angeles Times Festival of Books, taught writing workshops for at-risk communities, and read sections of her memoir in progress for Tongue and Groove, Dirty Laundry Lit, Vamp, and Roar Shack. She is a graduate of McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.

Writers’ Block is a bi-weekly podcast that highlights the work of writers, poets, scientists, musicians, and more to find the story behind the pieces. Host Mike Gravagno digs into his guests work the same way he digs into pie, voraciously and without pretension, because you don’t have to be high-falutin to enjoy talking about art. Writers’ Block is a joint venture from YourPopFilter.com and Anastamos, Chapman University’s Interdisciplinary Graduate Journal, and is available wherever you get your podcasts.
