Event Details

This workshop has been sponsored by the EFA - Electronic Frontiers Australia, a non-partisan, non-profit online civil liberties lobby group. Considering joining them or making a donation to continue the fight to protect your rights online and keep the internet free from censorship and surveillance.

The Online Privacy for Activists Workshop is aimed at activists or any citizen who wants to learn how to put in place some basic protections to keep their online communications private. Basic computer/web literacy ONLY will be assumed. You might not have taken any steps to secure your online communications yet - this workshop can be your first step.

Participants will walk out at the end knowing how to keep their email, instant messaging and browsing private, how to use Twitter & Facebook as securely as possible, how to send & receive encrypted files via Tor. If you bring a USB key with you, you will also leave with a Tails-enabled USB key which you can use safely for computing or web browsing on any computer.
***Participants are asked to bring a laptop and USB key.***
If you don't have a laptop, that's ok but you'll need to buddy up with someone who does have one.
If you do have a laptop, please be prepared to buddy up with someone who doesn't.
Bringing a USB key is optional, but recommended as we'll be showing you how to set it up to allow you to securely compute, anywhere.
"Each one, teach one." Participants are asked to ensure that after the workshop, they find someone who would benefit from learning what you learned, and teach them. We have 4 volunteers giving up a Saturday afternoon to share this knowledge with you, please pay it forward. :)

Big thanks to the tech geeks from EFA and Linux Australia who are helping to present this workshop. It couldn't happen without you!
