Event description

Description

NOTE: This is a two part workshop. You must be able to attend both parts of the workshop.

Part 1: Thursday, April 25, 6-7:30PM
Part 2: Thursday, May 2, 6-7:30PM

Video can be a powerful medium to critique stereotypes, tropes, and inconsistencies that inundate popular culture. During this two part workshop, participants will establish a working knowledge of video editing software and examine ways in which aspects of advertising, film, and stock video footage can be ripped and re-contextualized by manipulating framing, sequencing, color, sound, and speed. Through a combination of hands-on instruction and independent experimentation, they will produce work that critically evaluates inherent biases, the privileging of information, and increasingly corporatized channels that disseminate moving imagery. Before the first session, workshop attendees should identify a source video, or videos, on YouTube with which they would like to work.

Instructor: Peter Fankhauser

REMINDER: Every Thursday, The Union's Youth program hosts Youth Open Studios. Young artists ages 5-15 are invited to participate in self-directed studio time from 6-8pm. Come draw, paint, read, play games, or create art inspired by the exhibitions in our gallery. Open and flexible, this program provides space for joy and creative freedom in a safe environment. The cost is FREE. Advanced sign up is recommended, but not required. Participation is on a first-come-first-served basis.

Youth Open Studios was established to reduce barriers to participation in our Thursday Co-Op workshops for adults, creating an opportunity for young people to engage in hands-on art-making while their parents or guardians do the same. For more information, visit u-ca.org/youth.
