Event description

Description

Target Audience: Interpreters and students of interpreting

Description of Activity:

In forensic psychology investigators apply psychology to the field of criminal or civil law. This 5 hour live workshop will introduce interpreters and students of interpreting to the specialty field of interpreting in a forensic setting. Individuals will be introduced to psychological and psychiatric terminology and concepts related to diagnosis and treatment. Interpreters will learn about the intersection of mental health and legal issues and interpreting scenarios where clients who are Deaf are evaluated to answer specific legal-psychological questions for the Court. Participants will consider how clinically trained professionals use diagnostic assessment to answer legal questions and consider ways that an interpreter might influence the psychological evaluation process. Participants will discuss intrapersonal issues related to interpreting in this setting.

The analysis of case studies will serve to clarify concepts, provide examples of application, and hopefully facilitate learning. Interpreters participating in this workshop will have an opportunity for group discussion with peers and instructor.

Participants will learn:

*Terminology and jargon relevant to the forensic (mental health and legal) setting
*Three types of forensic evaluations
*The relevance of case law to forensic evaluations
*Challenges to interpreting in the forensic setting
*Resources that the interpreter can use during forensic interviews
