Event description

Description

A workshop for fashion creatives to understand, embrace, and implement sustainability:

Tackling climate change will require radical imagination, creativity, and an all-hands-on-deck approach. Fashion, a 2.5 trillion dollar business that holds up 3% of the global economy and employs hundreds of millions of people around the world, mostly young women, is a perfect place to start.

Sustainability is not a trend, but it is trending. Brands (from Dior to Zara) and publications (from Vogue to AnOther Magazine) are ready to take climate change and fashion's contribution to it, seriously.

What does that mean for fashion creatives? How can we help?

Also, what is sustainable fashion? What is greenwashing? How can we accelerate this pivot to sustainability, protect our planet, and what skills do we need to learn to stay relevant as the industry leans into sustainability?

Creatives against climate change is a series of workshops and seminars to answer these questions. Workshops are for fashion creatives to understand, embrace, and implement sustainability. This is not a passive "panel of experts" style workshop but one that is participatory, and embraces creative thinking and problem-solving on this critical issue. Workshops are designed by creatives for creatives to understand, engage with, and communicate about sustainability and connect with fellow climate-conscious creatives.

This is a new field in fashion—there is plenty to learn and endless opportunity for creativity to thrive.

Who is this workshop for?

Anyone can attend this workshop. However, the material is designed for people who work in fashion whether you’re in resourcing to a designer; photographer to production assistant; stylist to graphic designer.

No prior knowledge of climate change or sustainable fashion is needed.

Why Attend A Sustainability Workshop?

Sustainability is the future of the fashion industry

Understand: What really is sustainable fashion? And what is greenwashing?

Compete: What skills do I need to learn to stay relevant as the industry leans into sustainability?

Communicate: What are the key terms and questions I need to be asking my clients, colleagues, and customers to be knowledgeable about sustainability?

Discover: How can I reduce my environmental footprint at work? What are key brands to celebrate and how can I form a community of climate-conscious creatives?

Workshop Outcomes:

This workshop will provide an understanding of fashion's role in climate change, fashion sustainability, and the changes we need to make within the industry to protect the planet.

We present a fact-based introduction to the climate crisis (how bad is the damage? what do we need to do to fix it, and by when?), how the fashion industry contributes to the problem, what is sustainable fashion (and, what it isn't), and how to adopt sustainability in your work.

The materials presented will be shared after the workshop. You will be invited to join the CACC slack channel for ongoing conversation, community building, and resource sharing.

What we provide:

Coffee, tea, light brunch, note pad, and pens

What you should bring:

You are welcome to bring a laptop or other device for notetaking but it is not mandatory.

About the Instructor:

Laura Jones is based in New York City and consults for fashion creatives to understand, embrace and implement sustainable practices. She’s worked as a fashion creative consulting for brands and styling for the last 15 years. Jones has worked with many talented people, magazines, and brands including Alicia Keys, Drake, Katie Holmes, W Magazine, Vogue, Givenchy, Stella McCartney, and Reebok.

She has presented on climate change and sustainability on panels and at companies like Tory Burch, Nanushka, and Amour Vert. Jones is on the advisory board of the New Standard Institute, a nonprofit founded to drive the industry to achieve science-based environmental and social targets and completed The Climate Reality Leadership Corps training led by Al Gore (she also once found herself in an elevator with Gore and seized the opportunity to try to convince him to include information on fashion in his climate training curriculum. Time will tell if her literal elevator pitch worked). She also runs a fashion sustainability magazine: The Frontlash.
