REVISITING LOSS: EXPLORING THE UNDIGESTED EFFECTS OF ABORTION ON THE BODY/MIND OF WOMEN WITH EATING AND BODY ISSUES

2.0 CE Credit Workshop

With Roe v. Wade being threatened, many women are finding themselves revisiting feelings that have been dormant for years. When abortion was initially legalized, it was touted that one could go to the doctor on a lunch hour, have the procedure, described as scraping of a few cells, and be back to work as early as the following day. For many women, that seemed to be fine, but for others there was little to no guidance about the potential for long-lasting emotional ramifications. Women were so relieved that they could now avoid illegal procedures that, aside from being shame inducing, had the potential for infection, disease or even death. Recent scientific knowledge has shown that remnants of fetal cells can remain in a woman’s body for up to sixty years after each pregnancy.

As clinicians, how do we work with our clients to examine unexplored emotions that, like fetal cells, may have remained buried in their bodies.

This workshop will be both experiential and interactive, using guided imagery and detailed inquiry to explore the effects of abortion on eating/body issues. We will identify shared experience to unearth and honor residual feelings.

Susan Kane, LCSW is a graduate of The Women's Therapy Centre Institute and New Directions Writing Program. She is an affiliate of The Washington Psychoanalytic Institute. She has presented at The Renfrew National Conference on Neglect in the Transference/Countertransference Relationship. She is trained in EMDR. Her areas of expertise are in the treatment of people with eating problems, neglect and trauma. Her most recent venture is working to understand the effects of abortion on women throughout the life cycle.

In this 2 hour workshop clinicians learn how to:

1. Broach the topic of abortion with their clients

2. Explore their own transference/countertransference issues

3. Begin to understand how and where these issues live in their clients' bodies

4. How to nurture conflicting feelings while honoring the decision to abort

Refund Policy: 2 weeks prior to the workshop: 100% refund. 1 week prior to the event: 50% refund.
