Event description

Description

After having tried to write a quiet literary realist novel, my preferred form, I found myself writing stories with time machines. A few years later, I had finished a speculative novel in which portals depopulate the world while remaining, firmly, a realist author. This workshop will use prompts and discussion to help creative writers move into a space that may feel frightening, like borrowing from another genre or bending the rules of their own.

Liz Harmer is an award-winning writer of short stories and essays, and her debut novel came out with Knopf Canada in 2018 (to be released with Vintage Canada in 2019). She is a current fellow in the MFA program at Chapman University.
