Event description

‘Our task is to educate their (our students) whole being so they can face the future. We may not see the future, but they will and our job is to help them make something of it.’ Ken Robinson

Through the concept of learner agency, we recognise that students are agents of their own and others’ learning. Nurtured by peers, educators, the environment and learning community, a student’s concept of themselves as a partner in learning is connected with their sense of and ability to succeed. Through this workshop, participants will be inspired to be agentic learners themselves and explore what teachers can do to nurture learner agency and self-efficacy. Participants will construct understandings around children’s identities and rights and how these beliefs influence a child’s growth.

Participants will:

1. actively take responsibility for their own learning
2. inquire into the relationship between learner agency and self-efficacy
3. consider personal understandings around children’s identities and rights
4. explore strategies to nurture learner agency and self-efficacy
5. consider the role of the student, the teacher and the learning environment as partners in learning
6. investigate how the learning community can support student skills and dispositions to develop learner agency

Audience: This workshop is best suited for all elementary teachers and / or administrators who would like to deepen their understanding of the concept of learner agency and consider how it is translated and implemented in their context.
