Event description

Workshop Descriptor:

Meaningful Making builds classroom practice that support student’s learning journeys, and how clarifies how “deep dive” personal learning can find balance within traditional classroom structure.

In this workshop, participants will each design and build a personally compelling project that mixes physical construction, basic circuits and programming. Teachers will return to their classrooms with a complete exemplar project and the inspiration for new student projects. More importantly, each participant will have engaged in an authentic learning process and structured reflection. As it should be with our students, it will be with us: the work is the learning and the learning is the work.

Participants will:

  • Explore simple gateways into design and programming through powerful tools accessible for learners of any age.

  • Create a tangible learning object to take home.

  • Explore how learning environments encourage students to operate creativley and independently.

  • Develop skills in guiding student learning outside of our areas of expertise.

  • Refine wild ideas into compelling, and workable prompts for students.

  • Engage with Seymor Papert’s “hard fun” of learning.

This workshop is suitable for educators of all levels. This includes homeroom and single subject teachers who want to expand their teaching craft, as well as coordinators looking to expand cross curricular inquiry. Join others who strive for their classrooms to be driven by their students’ curiosity and passion.
