Event description

Description

Join the ASU Library Map and Geospatial Hub for this one-and-a-half workshop on how to access historical (and contemporary) topographic maps produced by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), going as far back as 1884.

Participants will learn about the various web platforms used for hosting and distributing free, publicly accessible topographic maps available in various digital, georeferenced file formats. Emphasis will be placed on using TopoView -- the best, easiest-to-use source of USGS topographic maps.

Workshop attendees will then learn how to import and use the scanned map images in a geographic information system (GIS) software platform with other types of GIS layers.

This workshop assumes no previous experience with GIS.

Non-ASU affiliates (members of the general public) are welcome to attend. Priority seating will be given to ASU affiliates (students, faculty, staff, alumni).

Twenty (20) computer workstations are available in the lab (Noble Library, Room 105). Alternatively, workshop participants may opt to bring their own laptop. A maximum of 40 total participants may attend. Those bringing their own laptops will need to pre-install the following free software applications:
