About this Event

Workshop Overview:

Within the next decade, individuals over the age of 65 will represent approximately 20 percent of the population. With this rise there will be an increasing number of adults presenting with dementia, mental health issues, and other chronic health conditions. Clinicians will be challenged with the task of treating the aging population.

In this workshop, Dr. Kreiling will provide an overview of the cognitive and physical changes that occur with normal aging. The difference between normal aging, mild cognitive impairment, and dementia will be discussed. We will review the various types of dementia. Cognitive screening measures and brief mood assessment tools will be introduced. Dr. Kreiling will provide information about treatment interventions for behavioral and psychiatric difficulties that often arise in patients who have been diagnosed with dementia.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of this workshop, participants will be able to:

*Discuss the changes in cognition and physical health that occur in normal aging.

*Review common mental health issues in the older adult population.

*Define the difference between normal aging and dementia.

*Review various types of dementia.

*Identify cognitive screening measures and brief mood assessment tools to assist with the early detection of decline and emotional distress.

*Provide interventions for behavioral and psychiatric difficulties that sometimes arise in individuals who have been diagnosed with dementia.

*Identify practical considerations for working with this population.

About the Presenter:

Kreiling, Psy.D., is a clinical neuropsychologist in Bend where she maintains a private practice devoted to the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of adults with a variety of general medical, neurological, and psychiatric conditions. Serving older adults and their caregivers is a large portion of her practice. She enjoys using neuropsychological test results to develop treatment plans and guide care.

Dr. Kreiling received her doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology with a specialization in Neuropsychology from Pacific University. She completed additional specialty training in Neuropsychology as a predoctoral intern at Eastern Virginia Medical School. She then went on to complete a two-year post-doctoral fellowship in Neuropsychology and Brain Imaging Research at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical School. She was a staff neuropsychologist with Geisinger Health System prior to returning to Oregon to establish Neuropsychological Services of Oregon, LLC.
