Overview of External Data with SharePoint BCS

In this module, we will provide an overview on all that makes up the interactions with External Data with BCS. We will cover External Content Types, External Lists, and External Data Columns. We will provide an overview of how to create each of them as well as usages.

Understanding Difference in Context when working with External Data

In this module, we will focus on how SharePoint 2013 and Online differentiates external data based on (1) where it resides, i.e. On Premises to the SharePoint 2013 farm, SQL Server, Internal Web Services, etc. (2) external to the organization such as SQL Azure, external Web Services or OData feeds. Finally we will discuss different tooling requirements based on the nuances of the location of the External Data.

Working with BCS External Data using No Code Solutions in SharePoint Designer 2013

In this module, we will focus on the three methods of interacting with External Data through BCS which is (1) SQL Server (2) Web Services (3) .NET Assembly. We will discuss the methods of using each of these options and briefly discuss the security implications of each of them. Security will be its own topic later in the session.

Working with BCS External Data using Visual Studio and OData

In this module, we will focus on the new paradigm in creating External Content Types and External Lists and subsequently how to use External Lists and External Data Columns from an end user perspective. We will use the new tooling support in Visual Studio 2013 to create these assets.

Overview of External Data with SharePoint Workflows

We will cover the No Code approaches in SharePoint Designer 2013 using the new Activities and Actions such as the Dictionary Object and HTTP Web Calls. We will also explore the new capabilities of using Visual Studio Declarative [No Code] workflows to interact with External Data focusing on the Dynamic Value and HTTP Web Calls. We will provide an overview of how to create each of them as well as usages.

Working with Workflows using No Code Solutions in SharePoint Designer 2013

In this module, we will use SharePoint Designer 2013 to explore the new No Code capabilities in the Action and Activities when working with External Data. We will focus as well on Stages, Steps, Loops and how they play a role in making a robust solution that could only previously been done via Visual Studio.
