Working with digitised collections - the raw material
Event Information
About this Event
Who is it for?
People working or volunteering in a small to medium sized heritage organisation with some digital knowledge.
What is it about?
The first workshop considers the raw material of all online collections content: digitised versions of real objects and associated information from collections databased. Digitised collections have many of the same management issues as physical collections, and need careful planning and rigorous documentation if you want to avoid getting in a muddle and have the information you need to create online content at your fingertips.
What will I gain?
- An appreciation of the issues to consider when planning collections digitisation.
- An understanding of how to manage digital assets such as images and other media files within the context of a small heritage organisation.
- Signposting to key resources with helpful further information on the topics covered.

Kevin Gosling, Chief Executive, Collections Trust
Kevin Gosling has been Chief Executive of the Collections Trust since 2015. He co-edited the latest version of Spectrum: the UK Museum Collections Management Standard, introducing several changes to make it easier to work with digital collections. He has led digital consultancy projects for clients including DCMs and Luxembourg's Ministry of Culture, and overseen the compilation of resources including a 'digital pathway' on digitising collections and a guide to presenting collections online.
As the Britten-Pears Foundation's Director of Communications he developed the brand, comms strategy and website for Britten 100, the 2013 Benjamin Britten centenary that won the Royal Philharmonic Society's 2014 Music Award for Audiences and Engagement. There he also developed the concept and much of the content for a richly interactive digital exploration of Britten's War Requiem.
Earlier in his career, Kevin worked at the Museum of London, for the museum-planning consultants Lord Cultural Resources, and at museums in Norway and St Lucia. He is a Fellow of the Museums Association.
