Event Details

As we age, we sometimes become forgetful.  Is it a one-time event or is it a foretelling of what’s to come?  As individuals age, we may notice their ability to process information may not be quite the same as it used to be.  When is it just being forgetful, and when is it a question of “capacity?”   If it is our first meeting with an individual, what should we do if we think there is a question of capacity?  Are there signs we should look for?  Is there a question of confidentiality?  This panel of experienced professionals will discuss real life scenarios and how they have worked through difficult situations involving individuals with diminished capacity.

Moderator:  Jim Cole (MACGP President – 1994) will be retiring at the end of July as Vice Chairman and CEO of Country Club Trust Company. Jim practiced law in North Carolina before beginning his 40-year trust career, which was capped by his election in 2014 into the Kansas City Estate Planning Society’s Hall of Fame, as one of the initial four members. Jim obtained his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York and his law degree from Wake Forest University. He was on the initial Board for MACGP and was MACGP’s Building Blocks chair for its first six years.

Christine DeMarea (MACGP President – 2005) is a partner with the law firm Husch Blackwell and focuses her practice in the area of private wealth. Her undergraduate is in finance and economics from Rockhurst University and her law degree and her LLM in tax is form UMKC. Christine is well-versed in business, farm and estate planning and charitable planned giving. She also has experience litigating complex trust and tax matters.

Jane Lampo (MACGP President – 2002) is Vice President for Institutional Advancement for the Kansas City University of Medicine and Biosciences. Jane holds degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Kansas and Johns Hopkins University. Her development career brings a wealth of experience from her 13 years at Children’s Mercy Hospital, her past 5 years in her current position, and development positions at Rockhurst Universty and William Jewell College.

Kevin Johnson (MACGP President – 1998) is a life insurance agent for New York Life and has been a life insurance professional in Kansas City for 41 years, holding both the CLU and the ChFC designations. His practice has been built in the specialized areas of estate planning, family business continuation, in-force policy management, and selected benefits for “key” employees. A graduate from the University of Kansas, Kevin’s first degree was in Chemistry with Honors.
