Working Respectfully with Transgender Clients: What Every Clinician Needs to Know

This day-long training will prepare mental health professionals to address the unique needs of transgender and gender-variant clients. The morning session will provide an overview of gender diversity and focus primarily on transgender adults who are transitioning or considering doing so. It will include working with their spouses and families. The afternoon session will cover transgender and gender-variant youth and the intersection of the gender spectrum and autism spectrum. Ethical considerations will be discussed.

Six (6) Category I Clinical CEUs approved by NASW NH Approval #3355

Course Objectives

Participants will be able to:

1. outline the etiology and developmental progression of gender dysphoria,

2. describe various identities prevalent in the transgender community and use terminology correctly,

3. take on the tasks of the mental health professional in transgender care,

4. guide transgender clients through the transition process,

5. identify the challenges of gender-variant youth on the autism spectrum, and

6. discuss with clients the intersectionality of gender identity and sexual orientation.

About the Presenter

Dr. Anne Boedecker is a psychologist and gender specialist in private practice in Concord, NH. She has been working with transgender clients for many years. She has conducted workshops and trainings on gender diversity for mental health professionals, ministers, and others. She is the author of The Transgender Guidebook: Keys to a Successful Transition and The Transgender Workbook: Your Journey to Womanhood. She identifies as a GLBTQIA SOFFA on many levels.
