Event description

Description

Area employers have job openings but many are experiencing a shortage of skilled workers. Job seekers or current employees may need additional skills to compete for these positions or to make a career change.

Business owners, human resource leaders and job seekers are invited to attend this complimentary workshop that will focus on two approaches to address the employee 'skills gap' in the marketplace.

This Work Based Learning workshop will feature two presentation topics:

Topic 1: WSU's Online Badge Courses - A New Resource for Employers and Students by Wichita State University

Presenter: Ms. Kimberly Moore, Director of Workforce, Professional and Community Education at Wichita State University

WSU's Badge courses provide an affordable, convenient way to build valuable career skills—all while earning contact hours for relicensure, college credit and digital certificate recognition for their accomplishments. Badges are:

  • Academic short courses of one credit hour or less that are designed for working professionals.
  • Allow students to demonstrate to employers their knowledge, skills and competencies in a subject area.
  • Online, self-paced, and offered at market-based tuition rates.

Topic 2: Work based Learning (On-the-Job Training and Registered Apprenticeships) by Workforce Centers of South Central Kansas

Presenters: Wendy Inzunza – Workforce Strategy Manager - Wichita; Alex Munoz – Workforce Strategy Manager – Auxiliary Offices; and Diann Gregg – Registered Apprenticeship Coordinator Local Area IV

Work-based learning, on-the-job training, and apprenticeships provide many benefits for students, jobseekers, and current employees. For employers work-based learning provides productive work on the job while current or potential full-time employees gain the needed knowledge and skills essential for long-term successful performance of the job.

These programs are completely employer-driven. The employer participates in the individual program development and makes all hiring decisions on candidates. The programs:

  • May offer reimbursement
  • Allow employers to build their own workforce, and
  • Provide employees or jobseekers the industry skills and credentials to better position them for career advancement
