Words & Verbs: Middle School Poetry Slam PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
MSQI is partnering with Urban Word NYC to launch Words & Verbs: Middle School Poetry Slam League. Participating MSQI schools will implement either an 8-session performance poetry unit (spring sprint) beginning in May or an integrative approach embedded throughout the school year, including teaching artist visits from Urban Word NYC, hosting your own in-school slams, and then sending your strongest poets to participate in a citywide middle school poetry slam in June, hosted by professional spoken word artists at an esteemed performance venue.
Professional development for this initiative will occur the afternoon of Wednesday, March 8, 2016 from 12-3pm. To participate, please identify a teacher to lead this effort, either during your strategic reading period, in ELA classes, or after school, and sign them up for the Wednesday, March 8, 2016.
Words & Verbs: Middle School Slam League
Urban Word NYC creates an 8-unit curriculum that engages a) reluctant readers with dynamic, culturally-relevant poetry, and b) inspires the generative writing process for students to create their own original slam poetry - & includes instructions for schools to host own classroom slams.
