A free online collaborative story-building laugh party exploring coastal B.C.'s diverse yet endangered Garry oak ecosystem.

About this event

Geared to be fun for writers and non-writers alike, humour writer Shelley Stein-Wotten, in partnership with Wordstorm and Vancouver Island Regional Library, invites you to Words of an Ecosystem. This free online collaborative story-building laugh party will guide participants as they explore the most diverse and endangered ecosystem in coastal B.C. – the Garry oak ecosystem. Through five stages of imagining Shelley and participants will together construct a story about how we can restore our relationship with this special place.

Shelley will read a piece for each stage of our relational journey and at the end of presenting each piece, participants will be asked to contribute a word, a collection of words, a phrase, or a sentence in response. Building from the energy of everyone in attendance, we'll explore how our community can begin reconnecting in place.

The story constructed from the activity will be publicly displayed at VIRL's Nanaimo North branch during the month of September. A short film exploring the process and results of Words of an Ecosystem will be released during BC Culture Days, on Oct. 8, 2022.

Words of an Ecosystem is part of the 2022 BC Culture Days Ambassador Series: Earth Endeavours, a collection of community-engaged creative projects calling the public to action. Beginning July 4, new creative challenges are being launched weekly as ambassadors invite everyone to explore our relationship with the Earth, with each other, and to navigate toward a healthier future. During Culture Days, from September 23-October 16, a series of micro-documentaries detailing the results of the ambassadors’ Earth Endeavours projects will be presented on the Culture Days website. Follow BC Culture Days on social media or at CultureDays.ca/en/bc to join the ambassadors on their journeys!

About Shelley Stein-Wotten

Writer of comedy, eater of foodstuffs, Rachelle (Shelley) Stein-Wotten harnesses humour as a mechanism for confronting reality. Her writing asks people to consider truths about how we live, including the more absurd aspects, and what they might say about who we are. For Shelley, writing comedy isn’t about making up funny jokes or situations, it’s about exposing and exploring the humour that is already there in order to illuminate new or forgotten paths of thinking.

Her sketches have been performed in Vancouver and Seattle and her work has been published in R U Joking?, The Temz Review, JÓN Magazine, and The Belladonna. She also co-produced and co-created the web series All My Pants, which won awards at LA Webfest. Shelley loves gardening and taking slow walks in the hopes of meeting new plant friends. She is a certified pollinator steward through Pollinator Partnership Canada as well as a self-certified invasive plant hacker.
